Jungle feelings
As part of a family trip to my first-born daughter’s graduation from high school in Campbell River, I of course took the opportunity to capture the fantastic backdrop of Vancouver Island for the first time. The island off the southwestern Canadian Coast is considered a true nature paradise, and that’s exactly how it is. Incredible old-growth forests, rugged seemingly endless beaches and the rushing Pacific all serve to create an ancient feeling of nature that we do not know from Europe. Not to mention the associated wildlife with humpback whales, orcas, sea eagles and bears. We stay near Campbell River and take a short trip to Quadra Island. During a Zodiac boatride we experience an extraordinary spectacle. Hundreds of white-tailed eagles circle over a huge sea surge and effortlessly fish the overabundant fish out of the water; fish that have been pushed to the surface by the tides streams and surges colliding. Even our guide pulls out his cell phone and says he has never seen such a big number of eagles in one spot before- of course we haven’t either. On Quadra Island everything is a little more lone, more indigenous, wilder and somehow even more beautiful.
