Pacific Freedom
My second journey to Canada, once again in virtue of a family trip namely for the high school graduation of my second-born daughter this time. For this trip, in addition to our stay in Campbell River, we also spend a few days on the Pacific coast near Ucluelet and Tofino. In addition to family commitments as part of high school graduation, we also have time for surfing courses in Tofino, the beautiful landscape and for entering the 8km long, wonderful “wild pacific trail”. The wildness of the trail can be felt with every step of the windy path and we don’t need any cougar, wolf or bear warning signs to understand that nature is still far above humans here. The tsunami collection points, too, are a clear indication of the vulnerable openness the coast bears to the vast Pacific ocean. Though we face the Pacific in bad weather Long Beach, the longest beach in the “Pacific Rim National Park Reserve”, we cannot help but feel the happiness of being able to experience this freedom. The Ucluelet Lighthouse Loop can’t be topped for raw Pacific beauty. Finally, taking the ferry to Vancouver we stay in the glitter and buzz of the big city, which, despite its urban appeal, causes me to suffer a slight culture shock.
